Is It a Cold or the Flu?
Colds and the flu are both caused by viruses, and they share many of the same symptoms. The difference is usually in how fast they start and how hard they hit. A cold tends to build slowly and stays mostly in the nose and throat. The flu often arrives suddenly, with fever, chills and body aches that can keep you in bed for several days.
- Common cold: runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, mild cough, low energy, little or no fever
- Influenza (flu): sudden fever or chills, muscle and body aches, headache, dry cough, deep fatigue, sometimes vomiting or diarrhea, which is more common in children
- Overlap: COVID-19, RSV and strep throat can look similar, which is why an exam, and testing when appropriate, matters
Not sure which one you have? Our guide on how to tell allergies, a cold, the flu and COVID-19 apart walks through the differences.

When You Should See a Provider
Most colds clear up on their own in 7 to 10 days. The flu is different, because some people are at higher risk for complications and treatment works best when it starts early. Schedule a visit if any of these apply to you or a family member:
- Fever above 101°F, or any fever that lasts more than three days
- Symptoms that improve and then suddenly get worse
- A cough lasting longer than 10 days, or one that brings up thick or discolored mucus
- Sinus pain, ear pain or a sore throat that is getting worse instead of better
- You are 65 or older, pregnant, or living with asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart disease or a weakened immune system
- You were exposed to the flu and want to know whether treatment makes sense for you
Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, confusion, bluish lips, seizures, severe dehydration or a high fever that will not come down.

What Happens During Your Visit
A cold and flu visit is focused and efficient, so you can get back to rest. Our provider will:
- Ask when your symptoms began, how they have changed and who else at home is sick
- Check your temperature, heart rate, breathing and oxygen level
- Examine your ears, nose, throat and lungs
- Recommend a rapid test when it will change your treatment
- Review your medications and health history so any treatment is safe for you
- Explain your diagnosis and give you clear instructions for care at home
Cold and Flu Treatment Options
Because colds and the flu are viral, antibiotics do not help them, and taking antibiotics you do not need can cause side effects and resistance. Treatment focuses on easing symptoms, speeding recovery and preventing complications.
- Antiviral medication for the flu when appropriate. It works best when started within about 48 hours of the first symptoms.
- Symptom relief guidance on fever reducers, decongestants and cough medicines that are safe with your other prescriptions
- Treatment for secondary infections such as sinus infections, ear infections, bronchitis or pneumonia, if they develop
- Breathing support for patients with asthma or COPD whose symptoms flare during a respiratory illness
- Work or school notes and a clear timeline for when you can safely return
Feeling Better at Home
Simple steps make a real difference in how quickly you recover and in keeping illness from spreading through your household:
- Rest, and stay home until you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine
- Drink plenty of water, broth or electrolyte drinks
- Use a cool-mist humidifier or saline spray for congestion
- Wash hands often, cover coughs and avoid sharing cups or towels
- Call us if symptoms get worse or are not improving as expected
Preventing the Flu Each Season
The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for nearly everyone 6 months and older. It is the most effective way to lower your risk of getting sick and of serious complications. Ask our team about flu season prevention at your next wellness exam or chronic care visit, along with other steps that help protect older adults and people with ongoing health conditions.
